CES 2020: Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold gets price, release date revealed
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold originally made its debut in May 2019. But now, the company is ready to give more details about the foldable Windows machine at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. We now know that the ThinkPad X1 Fold has a targeted release period of mid-2020, and it will go for US$2,499 (around CA$3,256). Unfortunately, we can't pin them down for an exact date yet.
What will that premium price get you? With the announcement of Microsoft Windows 10X, it was assumed that this operating system will be powering this machine. But since Windows 10X isn't available yet, Lenovo is hedging its bets and will be shipping with Windows 10 Pro for now.
The ThinkPad X1 Fold comes with a 13.3-inch 4:3 display, which you can fold into half and place the magnetic physical keyboard on top. When you fold it in half, you get two 9.6-inch 3:2 screens.
You can opt to use the full screen and detach the Bluetooth keyboard, too. The device has a kickstand on one corner so you can prop it up, or you can buy an optional stand from Lenovo for US$23.99 (CA$31).
"The Lenovo X1 Fold is a first experiment of a new category of a device," Frank Gillett, an industry analyst at Forrester Research, told Time. "We're still figuring it out. But, back in the '80s, it took a while to figure out what a laptop was supposed to look like. We're entering a period of multi-year experimentation."
Its compact size makes it easily portable, and the different modes it offers make it an exciting proposition. Lenovo isn't one to shy away from experimenting with various form factors, so we could only hope the company keeps toying around with this idea.
