CES 2020: Samsung Family Hub smart ref tips you off when you're running out of ingredients

Samsung first introduced the Family Hub smart fridge at the Consumer Electronics Show in 2016. Since then, the company has been releasing iterations that improve its capabilities. The latest update introduces some software enhancements to improve the artificial intelligence capabilities of the cameras inside the refrigerator.

The cameras inside the Family Hub smart fridge can already show you what's inside. With the AI update, the Family Hub can supposedly offer recommendations as well as help you identify what ingredients you're low on. We aren't sure though how it'll do that with ingredients kept in Tupperware.

On top of that, the new Family Hub will help with meal planning. With Whisk, the food technology startup Samsung bought last year, you can plan meals for up to a week, and your Family Hub fridge can generate a smart shopping list with the ingredients. These ingredients can be used for multiple recipes.

With the Family Board feature, the built-in touchscreen on your Family Hub works like a virtual bulletin board, too. Now, the smart ref can show videos by mirroring content from your Samsung TVs and phones. Similar to the Samsung Sero TV, you can watch vertical videos on your fridge now.

The new ref can also monitor and control over 1,000 SmartThings-compatible products in your home. A new SmartThings Video widget allows you to view multiple security cameras at-a-glance.

Samsung said in a press release that the software enhancements would be available in the spring.
