Sony's PS5 supply issues believed to continue into 2022

If you've been patiently waiting to get your hands on Sony's PlayStation 5, you might still find it hard to find the console next year. According to Bloomberg, the company's CFO, Hiroki Totoki, told analysts at a recent earnings report that Sony is still finding it challenging to keep up with demand.

"I don't think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldn't be able to catch up with demand," Totoki reportedly said, later adding "We have sold more than 100 million units of the PlayStation 4 and considering our market share and reputation, I can't imagine demand dropping easily."

Sony plans to produce at least 14.8 million PS5 consoles in the financial year that started last month, April 2021, after selling 7.8 million through March 31. The company sold 14.8 million PS4 consoles in its first full fiscal year, but it didn't experience severe supply constraints during that period. The Verge suggested initial demand for the PS5 might be markedly higher this time.
