Meta and Magic Leap in talks to partner on VR optics and manufacturing
Meta is reportedly in talks with Magic Leap to license the latter's optical tech and manufacturing process for Meta's virtual reality headsets. The Financial Times says the two companies are negotiating a multi-year deal that would not involve a joint headset. But it would help Meta reduce its reliance on China and compete with Apple and other rivals in the AR space.
Meta did not comment on the report, but Magic Leap confirmed it was exploring partnerships with other industry players. Magic Leap’s CEO Peggy Johnson said last year that the company had received a lot of interest in its IP and optics production.
The report comes as Meta faces pressure from investors to show results from its metaverse projects, which cost about USD 10 billion a year and are not profitable yet. Meanwhile, Apple is expected to announce its own augmented reality headset at WWDC next month.
