Microsoft Teams to offer new virtual backgrounds

Microsoft Teams is getting a major update to refresh its virtual backgrounds, including new animated ones. The new backgrounds are designed to match the different preferences and needs of 300 million active monthly Teams users. Whether you want to hide your messy room or create a fun and imaginative atmosphere, you can find one that works for you.

The update will roll out in two phases. First, you will see a large collection of new still images. You can choose from six categories of still photos, including wood and light, contemporary scenes, colourful clouds, mountains, and more. There’s also a “belonging” category that’s especially noteworthy. It features backgrounds that are accessible and inclusive for people on the autism spectrum. For example, some backgrounds are tailored for people who are sensitive to patterns and materials.

The second phase will bring some animated backgrounds in June. Microsoft has not revealed much about them, but they are expected to compete with the ones that Zoom has offered for years.
