What’s new on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 is the latest flagship foldable phone from the Korean tech giant. It retains many of the Z Fold4's features, but also brings some significant improvements to the form factor. One of the primary upgrades is the new hinge. It features a teardrop shape that allows the phone to close flat without a gap. This makes the phone thinner and lighter than its predecessor, as well as more durable.
The hinge also has a double-rail mechanism that can absorb shocks better. The Z Fold5’s screens are also protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2. It has a 7.6-inch main screen that now achieves a higher peak brightness of 1750 nits (matching the Galaxy S23 series).
The screen also supports the S Pen, which is now 40 percent thinner. But it still does not fit inside the phone. Instead, Samsung offers a case that can hold the S Pen and attach to the phone. The Z Fold 5 also has a 6.2-inch cover screen that can be used when the phone is closed. The cover screen has the same resolution and refresh rate as the main screen, but it is smaller and narrower.
There are five cameras in total on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5, including a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 12-megapixel telephoto camera, and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera on the back; a 10-megapixel selfie camera on the cover screen; and a 4-megapixel under-display camera on the main screen.
The Z Fold5 runs on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chipset, which is an overclocked version of the Snapdragon 888 processor. It has 12GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of internal storage. This foldable also has a 4,400mAh battery that supports wireless charging and reverse wireless charging.
Some of the minor software improvements include more apps viewable in the taskbar and a new two-handed drag-and-drop feature. Samsung plans to bring these feature to older Fold devices.
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 starts at CAD 2,399 in Canada. The device is available to pre-order now and will be released on August 11. It comes in three standard colors: icy blue, phantom black, and cream. There are also two exclusive colors that can only be ordered from Samsung’s website: gray and a warmer blue.
