Samsung’s mobile chief, TM Roh, has revealed impressive numbers and goals for the company’s foldable phones. According to him, Samsung sold nearly 10 million foldables in 2022, with the Galaxy Z Flip4 being more popular than the Galaxy Z Fold4. For 2023, he expects to sell 15 million foldables, making Samsung the undisputed leader in this segment. Analysts have different estimates for the total foldable market size, ranging from 18 million to over 20 million units. This means that Samsung could capture up to 75% of the foldable market share this year.

Roh shared in another interview some insights into the preferences of different regions and customers. He said that the Galaxy Z Flip5 will outsell the Galaxy Z Fold5 by a larger margin, especially in Korea. He also predicted that one out of three Galaxy flagships sold in Korea will be a foldable model. Globally, he expects that foldables will account for more than 20% of all Galaxy flagship sales.

These ambitious targets are part of Samsung’s long-term vision to make foldables the mainstream choice for smartphone users. Last year, Roh stated that he expects the Galaxy Z series to surpass the Galaxy S series by 2025. This will depend on whether Samsung can maintain its growth momentum and innovation in the foldable space. Next year will be a crucial test for Samsung’s foldable strategy and its ability to achieve its 2025 goal.
