Report: Meta plans global subsea cable network
Meta is reportedly planning to construct a massive, privately-owned subsea cable network spanning the globe. This ambitious US$10 billion (around CA$14.3 billion) project aims to create a 40,000+ kilometre network that circumvents geopolitical hotspots, enhancing the company's control over data traffic for its services like Facebook and Instagram.
Unlike its existing investments in shared cables, this rumoured new network will be solely owned by Meta, granting it full control over data flow and prioritization. The planned route, dubbed "W," will connect the US east and west coasts via crucial hubs in India, South Africa, and Australia, strategically avoiding regions prone to cable cuts.
This reported move aligns Meta with tech giants like Google, which have also invested heavily in private subsea cable infrastructure. Meta is expected to provide further details on this significant project, including capacity, specific routes, and the rationale behind this ambitious undertaking, in early 2025.
