Beta version of Google Maps shows that you might soon be able to add or remove places you’ve visited

If you use Google Maps on your mobile phone frequently, you may or may not know that when you check out a specific location, the app logs this under the “Your places” list. If you want to see places you’ve visited before, it’s accessible through that tab, too. Now, if for some reason you want to add locations that aren’t on the list or you want to take some out, Google Maps is testing this out right now. Beta version 9.70 of the app adds these two options. When you select a specific location, it will show you if you’ve been there and when you were there the last time. It can be seen in your timeline as well. And, as mentioned, a Remove option has been added, too.

Some of the other features seen in the APK teardown done by Android Police have seen features like custom shortcuts, movie show times and ticket sales support, as well as native screenshot feature, among others. It’s important to note that some of these features might not show up in the non-beta version but there is also the possibility that it might. Let’s just treat these as a heads up of features you might see in the near future.

Apple updates App Store logo and makes other cosmetic changes to iOS 11 update

The developer beta version of iOS 11 brings some cosmetic updates to Apple’s mobile platform. One of those that caught our attention is the new App Store logo, which Apple hasn’t changed in years. They’re putting away the paintbrush/pencil/ruler trio and replacing these with popsicle sticks. We’re not sure why they opted to replace the previous items with the sticks. Aside from the App Store’s new logo, Maps and Clock apps seem to get newer, more subtle redesigns, too. Apple has also introduced some bug fixes and performance upgrades.

The company took out a few things, too. Some live wallpapers are no longer pre-loaded and auto brightness option is now seen under the accessibility part of the settings. You should be seeing these changes now if you’re part of the developer program. But if you’re willing to wait for the public beta, you should see that pretty soon.

iOS 11 Public Beta is now available for download

The biggest Apple iOS update, specially for iPads, is now available as a public beta ahead of the expected Fall release. Previously only available for developers since WWDC 2017, iOS 11 can be installed on compatible iOS devices today. Head over to beta.apple.com and sign up with your Apple ID. Note that as with most beta software things may not always work and there will be bugs.

Apple strongly reccomends backing up devices and that beta testers use secondary iPhones and iPads so as not to experience problems that could affect your data. Note, too, that few of your apps will work as expected since devs still need to tweak them for iOS 11.

Instagram opens beta-testing for Android users

If you love Instagram and are using an Android device, now you can get a chance to try out new features before they go live. The Facebook-owned app is inviting Android users to sign up for beta-testing program. To be a beta-tester you have to be willing to replace your existing Instagram with a beta version of the app, which of course will come with its own set of bugs and other problems. Beta programs are designed for a select number of users to try out new features to see what works and what doesn’t before a wider release.

To sign up, you have to join the Instagram Beta Group on Google+. From there, you visit the tester link and download Instagram from Google’s Play Store to update your existing app. While using this version, make sure to submit feedback through the “Report a problem” option.
