Future's in the Cloud: Microsoft's next CEO likely to be Satya Nadela

Microsoft seems to be moving closer to (finally!) choosing the successor to Steve Ballmer, who leaves later this year. The front runner is an insider and the head of Microsoft’s cloud and data center software group,  Satya Nadella. 

A profile on Bloomberg Businessweek says of Nadela, "he’s a sharp, persuasive individual who has spent more than 20 years working at the company. Crucially, he’s more or less Microsoft’s cloud master and has a firm handle on what it takes to run Bing, Office365, Skype, and Xbox Live. Nadella is also well-liked and respected throughout the industry."

Apple CEO Tim Cook issues apology for Maps lapse

Apple's CEO Tim Cook issued an apology to customers who may have experienced issues with the new Maps app that comes standard with iOS 6. In a letter on Apple.com, Cook stated that more than 100 million devices were already using the app, which have searched half a billion locations.

Cook's letter, which can be found in full after the break, promises that Maps will get better and gives users the option to download "map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app."

The Apple Beat: Apple wins patent infringement case against Samsung, awarded $1 billion in damages

Apple Inc. has been vindicated in its unprecedented patent case against rival Samsung. The nine-member jury at the San Jose Federal court ruled for Apple  today in the case that began in April 2011. The landmark case revolved around Samsung's copying of Apple's design and functionality in its iPhone and iPad devices. Apple was not found guilty of any of the instances of patent infringement charged by Samsung.

Jon Rubinstein leaves HP

iPod engineering pioneer and former Palm CEO who was the face of webOS has left HP. The official quote from Hewlett and Packard is, "Jon has fulfilled his commitment to HP. We wish him well."

It seems Rubinstein's career has come full circle. He started his career at HP as a young and talented computer science and electrical enginnering graduate right out of Colorado State University. Rubenstein found his way back in HP many years later when, as then CEO of Palm, he was brought on board once Palm was acquired for 1.2 billion.
