Catch ‘CODEGIRL’ for free on YouTube until November 5th

As part of Google’s Made With Code initiative, a new documentary called CODEGIRL by Lesley Chilcott (An Inconvenient Truth and Waiting for Superman) will be streaming on YouTube for free until November 5th. According to Susan Wojcicki, CEO of YouTube, the film “follows the story of 5,000 girls from 60 countries as they compete in a global entrepreneurship and coding competition by Technovation. The girls have three months to develop an app that attempts to solve a problem in their local community. In the film, they size up their competition, interact with teachers and local mentors, learn to code, and pitch their ideas all in hopes of winning $10,000 in funding and support.”

Initiatives like this are meant to encourage young girls and women to get into tech field. If you want to support the film, you can do so by sharing it with the hashtag #Rallyforcodegirl. You can watch it from the video embedded above.

Free Microsoft course teaches newbies to code Windows 10 apps

Microsoft needs developers to create apps for their platform. What better way to encourage them but through free tutorials that even “absolute beginners” can do. This series of video lessons teaches you to make Universal Windows Platform apps that can work on different devices like PCs, phones, tablets, HoloLens, Xbox, and Raspberry Pi. The lessons extend up to when you submit an app to the Windows Store.

To get started, Microsoft encourages you to have basic grasp of coding in C# so best check out the C# Fundamentals first. And then you can take the two-part course. You’ll first learn the basics to make a simple app and then create four full-fledged apps: a soundboard to play funny sounds, a weather app, an album cover matching game, and an encyclopedia of Marvel characters with Cortana integration.

MasterCard Canada calls on female developers to Master the Code

MasterCard Canada is encouraging all female professional and student developers to participate in its MasterCard N>XT developer challenge.  A recent Statistics Canada study found that while Canada is seeing an increase in the number of young women with university degrees in computer science programs, men still hold the majority of degrees within this field[1].  The challenge is an opportunity for women to apply their technology skills to a business challenge that could influence the future of payments.  MasterCard N>XT, co-sponsored by Rogers and CIBC, is the first payment network developer challenge in Canada and will be held at the MaRS Discovery District.
