Dyson searches for ‘ReThinkers’ a.k.a. world’s brightest minds

Dyson doesn’t just want smart people, they want the brightest minds. Those who are able to take on a series of challenges that test “ingenuity, wrong thinking, and perseverance.” This competition has an attractive prize waiting for those up to take the challenge: a chance to visit Dyson’s top secret technology campus in the UK and meet Dyson CEO Max Conze—all expenses paid for.

The British company opened the £250m campus in Malmesbury, Wiltshire last month. The site is currently home to 2,500 Dyson people with 129 laboratories, space for hands-on prototyping, designing, and breakout spaces for collaboration. The campus also has a multi-purpose sports facility and café to give the place the university feel. If that’s something you want to see in person, you can find out more here. The Apple Beat: Pressure mounts on Apple to make iPhone 7 truly great

“Skate to where the puck is going to be, not to where it has been,” that’s a quote by the Great One, Wayne Gretzky, which Steve Jobs referenced during the momentous launch of the original iPhone in 2007.

Jobs continued by saying, “we try to understand as we develop our product road map, what’s going to be exciting in the future. And that’s one of the advantages we have over our competitors. Our competitors tend to put the cross hairs on where we are now, and by the time they come up with a product that tries to match where we are now, we’re beyond them. We’re one or two generations beyond, moving faster than they are.”

That was the spirit of innovation that powered the Apple engine and that’s what made the iPhone such an audacious, brave and, in hindsight, timely invention. But the world has changed and while Apple is still the most valuable company, the pressure is on to see if it is still the most innovative.

James Dyson Award now looking for 2016 entries

For the first time ever last year, a Canadian team took home the international prize for the James Dyson Award. Now, if you want to follow in the footsteps of the four engineering students from the University of Waterloo, you can start sending in those entries. Run by the James Dyson Foundation, the James Dyson Award is now open to 22 countries including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, Spain, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, the UK, and the USA.

You have until July 19^th to submit your entries. The national winners and finalists will be announced on September 8^th and the shortlist will be released on September 29^th. The winning team and finalists will be announced on October 27^th. The international winner stands to win $60,000 for the student and $10,000 for the student’s university department. There will be two international runners-up that will take home $10,000 each. The national winners, on the other hand, will take home $4,000 each.
