General Motors is doubling down on its Super Cruise driver-assistance technology, aiming to generate billions in revenue and establish itself as a tech leader. This move comes as GM exits its loss-making Cruise robotaxi business.

GM projects Super Cruise will bring in approximately US$2 billion (around CA$2.9 billion) in annual revenue within the next five years. The company sees this high-margin revenue stream as key to its transformation, similar to Tesla's focus on technology.

GM plans on developing a ChatGPT-like assistant for cars

General Motors joins the fray of companies looking to use the machine learning models that power ChatGPT. The carmaker is working on using the technology for its in-car digital assistant. GM envisions using the assistant to support drivers in instances where they would typically turn to their vehicle's owner's manual in the past. For example, it can show you how to replace your car's tire. It can also offer integration and scheduling features with other devices, including garage door openers.

But GM is reportedly trying to add a "car-specific layer" on top of the large language models, which will make it operate differently than other chatbots like Bing Chat. Speaking of Bing, GM's effort in this space is part of its collaboration with Microsoft, which will most likely run on Azure. The company hasn't revealed the name of the software yet or the potential release date.

GM files new trademark, suggesting an electric Corvette is coming

General Motors' newest trademark filing suggests there might be an electric Corvette in our future. The automaker filed a trademark for a vehicle called "E-Ray" in the "motor land vehicle" category, which could be a play on the name "Stingray—a nameplate of several versions of the Corvette.

Over the last year, GM has announced 12 new electric vehicles across its brands, but a Corvette hasn't made that list yet. If this trademark application is anything to go by, we might hear something soon.

General Motors launches pre-orders for its first e-bikes

Last November, General Motors announced its plans to launch electric bicycles. It wanted the public's opinion on what the brand should be called, so it announced a crowdsourcing campaign. GM has since announced the name—ARĪV, which is pronounced like "arrive"—and has started taking pre-orders in select European countries.

GM will be releasing two models under the ARĪV brand. One is called Meld, a compact e-bike; while the other is called Merge, a folding e-bike. The Merge can be folded easily so you can roll it along on its two wheels when folded.
