Google brings Gmail’s quick access sidebar to Google Docs, Calendar

After introducing Material Design to Gmail, Google has slowly made it easier to switch between some of its apps within one browser window. Within the email client, you get quick access to Keep, Calendar, and the newly revamped Tasks apps. Now, this quick access sidebar is coming to Google’s productivity apps like Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drawings. Google Calendar is also getting access to this sidebar but, as expected, only gets Keep and Tasks. Window switching might soon be less of an issue if you’re fully baked into Google’s suite of apps.

It’s now easier to reschedule meetings on Google Calendar

Do you need to reschedule a meeting? Google Calendar wants to make this an easier affair for you. The app will let you propose alternative times within the app itself. The organizer of the meeting will then have the option to review and accept or reject the new time. The organizer will also be able to see the availability windows of the other attendees, if their calendars are shared with co-workers, that is. Google Calendar will show these shared calendars side-by-side to make it easier to set a new time that can accommodate everyone. Part of this new feature is letting you add an optional message to give the organizer context on why the meeting needs to be rescheduled. The feature is now live on Google Calendar for the web but will come to mobile starting August 13^th. It should also work across domains as well as Microsoft Exchange.

Google Calendar finally gets an iOS widget

Google certainly took its time to introduce this new feature to Google Calendar users on iOS. The app finally gets a Today widget on the iPhone and iPad. It’ll show you your upcoming events at a glance in the Today section of the lock screen and notification shade. It’ll first show you your next two events and you can expand that to show another four. The app also gets 3D Touch support. So when you press down with 3D Touch on your iPhone 6s and 7, you can see the preview there, too.

Google family calendars are now rolling out to users

If you’ve taken advantage of the new Family Group feature from Google, one of the things included is a new family calendar. All members of the family group will automatically be looped into the calendar. Those in the group can add and modify events and rename the calendar. Non-family members can’t be added into the calendar. Calendar sharing has always been available for Google Calendar but this feature will avoid duplicate calendar events for those in the group. It’s not yet live for all users but it should be showing up soon.
