Google Play editions of HTC One M8 and M7 get Android 4.4.4 upgrade

Good news for owners of the Google Play editions of HTC One M8 and M7! It would seem the latest version of Android KitKat has begun rolling out to your devices. Don’t expect any user interface changes or the like though because Android 4.4.4 is for the backend of your device. It says it improves performance, security, and stability.

Google starts Android 4.4.3 KitKat rollout

Google has finally begun rolling out the latest iteration of its mobile operating system to Nexus devices and a few Google Play versions of some OEMs. It’s no surprise the update arrives first to Google-owned or -managed devices. The update has shown up on Nexus 5, Nexus 7 (Wi-Fi version), Play editions of the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One M7 and M8, and Sony Z Ultra. The Moto X for T-Mobile is also getting the update first, the Moto G bought online in the US and in retail stores in Brazil, and the Moto E bought online in the US.

This minor update will have a new interface for the dialer, new colors, as well as additional bug fixes, security patches, and overall stability improvements. It will also reportedly fix the battery drain that happens when the camera is used.

Detailed look at the design process of the HTC One M8

Are you curious about the design process and philosophy behind the HTC One M8? Stuff got an exclusive interview with HTC’s Creative Director Daniel Hundt to talk about the One M8 and the future designs of HTC products. Hundt said they started with a chunk of metal and thought about what they wanted to do with that. He said he is a fan of a design approach “that’s not forced, that make you think that’s just what a phone or a chair is supposed to look like. It’s a natural result of the material, without technology being forced in just for technology’s sake.”

Hundt also said that they hope to make a phone that’s as close to 100% metal as possible. The M8 is currently 70% metal. Imagine what a full-metal phone would look like. We’re not sure about the possibility of this happening but we’d like to see HTC try.
