Google's Gboard keyboard turbocharges typing and search on iOS

In a surprise move, Google has released a replacment keyboard for iOS that integrates swipe functionality, access to search, emoji and animated gifs. As Google explains it, "Searching and sending stuff on your phone shouldn’t be that difficult. With Gboard, you can search and send all kinds of things—restaurant info, flight times, news articles—right from your keyboard. Anything you’d search on Google, you can search with Gboard. Results appear as cards with the key information front and center, such as the phone number, ratings and hours. With one tap, you can send it to your friend and you keep the conversation going."

I've been using Goard for few days on my iPhone 6S Plus and my iPad and find it to be more versatile than many third-party keyboards including iOS's stock keyboard. If you already like Google services, this one's a no brainer and worth checking out.

Turn your Mac into an emoji machine with the emoji keyboard

Want to extend your emoji typing ways onto your Mac but want to make it easier? The team behind Disk Cactus has a Kickstarter project that’ll give you an emoji keyboard overlay. It isn’t a physical keyboard per se but rather a silicone covers that fit Apple’s wireless desktop keyboards, 13” MacBook Airs, 13/15” MacBook Pros, and the 11” MacBook Air.

The emoji keyboard works with corresponding software so you just need to press caps-lock key for a one-touch emoji shortcut. But if you play around with pairing shift, control, and option, you get around five characters per button. This’ll give you 150 emojis to play around with. The funding goal for the emoji keyboard is at US$20,000 and they have around 25 days to go. They have raised $4,500 at the moment and you can pledge as little as $5. But if you want the keyboard skin and software, you need to shell out $15.

Video: Demo of the Typo 2 keyboard cover for iPhone at CES 2015

The original Typo keyboard for the iPhone was somewhat controversial in that it looked and felt like a BlackBerry keyboard and that resulted in a famous lawsuit which went in BlackBerry's favour. We recently got to see the Typo 2, designed for the iPhone 6 in action. While the Typo 2 features a backlit keyboard that allows for quick typing, it does cover the Touch ID button. Check out a demo above.
