Windows 10 Creators Update is now available

Microsoft's

Microsoft's first big update to Windows 10 this year, the Creators Update is now starting to hit compatible Windows PCs or can be enabled using the Update Assistant.

Featuring a number of new features and improvements skewed towards creatives and designers, Creators Update is the first of two large system updates happening this year with the Redstone 3 update expected in Fall. I've just installed the update on my Surface Book and while there aren't any visibly dramatic changes, there are various subtleties that I'll need a few days to take note of.

As with any major system upgrade, there are a number of things to consider. If you use your PC for work or for anything of a critical nature, you may want to hold off until all the drivers and apps have been updated to work with the new OS. Also, it is strongly advised that you backup your files and system before heading off into your update. Creator's Update will trickle as an option on compatible devices in the coming months.

Microsoft’s future updates could be 35 percent smaller than the usual

Lucas Jackson / Reuters

Following the release of Microsoft’s Creators Update later this spring, the sizes of the operating system’s updates will be significantly smaller. Microsoft’s Unified Update Platform is set to shrink sizes of future updates to save you the trouble of downloading an entire build of your system every time. The feature they’re using is called differential download packages, which basically means it just “downloads what you need.” It’ll look at what files are on your system and use these to rebuild the new OS version from there.

It seems simple but it needed a lot of work in the background given the decades of legacy code and patches. Of course, the major release like Creators Update will need the download of the full build. But after that, the next smaller updates will be about 35 percent smaller, according to Microsoft’s Director of Program Management Bill Karagounis.
