OnePlus Nord is the brand's return to its 'True North'

OnePlus is going back to its affordable flagship roots with its upcoming launch of the OnePlus Nord. The company's co-founder, Carl Pei, revealed that Nord refers to the concept of "true north." He said in a tweet, "Some people have been asking what the Nord name means. It comes from the concept of true north. We each have this inner compass that guides us. This product line reminds us to always search for our true north, and we hope it will keep reminding you of yours."

With a promise of releasing this new phone for under US$500, it brings us back to the earlier days of the company when it produced "flagship killers" or handsets that packed in some more premium specs but at a fraction of the price. In recent years, though, the company's devices kept creeping up the price brackets, with its latest OnePlus 8 series being its most expensive devices to date.

OnePlus teases new smartphone with upcoming documentary

OnePlus has been teasing an upcoming release of a new phone that has been called the OnePlus Z or the OnePlus Nord. Aside from putting up a mysterious Instagram account, the company will release a documentary called New Beginnings to give us a better insight into the device rumoured to be coming out in July. The documentary's trailer recently went online, with the documentary set to premiere on June 30.

The documentary itself has an interesting premise. The OnePlus team working on the phone had only six months to get everything done. And from what the teaser has shown us, it hasn't been an easy time given the shorter than usual development cycle. There will be four parts to New Beginnings, and we aren't sure when the other parts are dropping.

OnePlus, McLaren partnership comes to an end

Or in the words of a McLaren spokesperson, the partnership "came to its scheduled conclusion recently." There won't be any more McLaren-branded OnePlus phones in our immediate future. But it seems the automaker was satisfied with the partnership, calling it a "highly successful collaboration between two iconic and innovative brands." And it looks like they aren't saying there won't be possible collaborations in the future. According to their statement, "OnePlus has been a supportive, valued partner and we wish them well and hope to see them in the future."

The two companies started collaborating in 2018, and we've seen McLaren Edition models of the OnePlus 7T Pro and OnePlus 6T. And there was the OnePlus Concept One, which never got an official release beyond the prototype.
