Google seeks students help with open source dev work with Google Code-in program

In case you haven’t heard yet, Google has opened its Google Code-in 2017 student program with the contest happening starting November 28. Basically, the tech giant is calling on pre-university students from around the world ages 13 to 17 to help out with open source tasks. Participants can win everything from certificates, t-shirts, hoodies, and a chance to win a trip to Google’s California headquarters. On top of that, the program doesn’t just give kids access to these open source tasks but it brings them in contact with mentors from Google’s participating organizations, too. Red Hat receives Common Criteria Security Certification for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7

Red Hat, Inc, the world's leading provider of open source solutions, announced that Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.1 has been awarded the Common Criteria Certification at Evaluation Assurance Level (EAL) 4+ for an unmodified commercial operating system under the Operating System Protection Profile (OSPP).

This marks the first time that an operating system has been Common Criteria-certified with Linux Container Framework Support, further demonstrating Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7’s ability to provide hardened and more secure IT innovations like Linux containers.

Apple releases Swift programming language into open source

Apple has released its Swift programming language, used for developing iOS and Mac OS applications and programs, into open source. Swift was developed two years ago as a replacement to Objective-C as a simplified yet powerful deveilopment tool.

Apple says Swift is, "the fastest growing programming language in history and combines the performance and efficiency of compiled languages with the simplicity and interactivity of popular scripting languages.

Apple today also launched the Swift.org website with detailed information about Swift open source, including technical documentation, community resources and links to download the Swift source code.

Tizen OS introduces 15 additional partners

The Tizen Association has just announced the addition of 15 more partners who will help develop the open source operating system Tizen. The partner program was introduced in November 2013 with 36 initial members. The new partners include ZTE, AccuWeather, CloudStreet, Sprint, Baidu, Cyberlightning, SoftBank Mobile, Acrodea, DynAgility, Red Bend Software, Gamevil, Piceasoft, Nomovok, Ixonos, and Inside Secure. The members can attend Tizen Association meetings to help develop the OS and work with Tizen Association Working Groups.
