SlideShow: Inside Apple's WWDC pre-keynote

We're an hour away from the announcements here at WWDC 2014. Here are some photos from the Moscone Center West as well an idea of what took place before the keynote starts. Aside from the usual black banners, there are also various cars parked inside the Moscone Center, which means there will be some sort of CarPlay reveal today.

The Apple Beat: A week away from WWDC 2014, let the games begin

Apple's yearly World Wide Developer's Conference is taking place next week in in San Francisco. Over 5,000 developers and partners are expected to come to the Moscone West conference centre to learn more about Apple's plans and products for the coming year and you can believe that the rest of the world will be watching.

Mostly focused on upcoming software builds, namely the next version of iOS and its desktop counterpart OS X, Apple's used WWDC as a launching pad for notable hardware products, some of which are available for purchase right after the keynote and others are offered as a sneak peek, just like the redesigned Mac Pro was last year.

The Apple Beat: OS X's disc free OS recovery is rock solid

I recently had to rescue my wife's ageing first-generation MacBook Air from what looked like impending disk failure. We decided to move her system files to a newer machine with more updated hardware and a biggler hard drive. Then I realized I no longer had the installer disks that came with the devices.

After a brief moment of panic, I remembered that Apple hasn't been including installer disks for the past few years and that any system restoration could be done via OS X Recovery or via  the cloud. I'm old school in the sense that I've always felt the need to have backup copies of operating systems for computers I use. Specially since in the past, these have been useful to boot from in order to repair or reinstall troubled computers.

OS X 10.9 Mavericks slated for late October release

The latest news from the OS X 10.9 front is that Mavericks is coming in October. While the seventh preview was recently supplied to developers, the OS is still not ready for public consumption. Among the new features coming to Mavericks are iBooks for Mac, Finder Tabs, Apple Maps, App Nap and Compressed Memory plus the usual refinements and overall speed increases. Keep puned for more OS X updates.
