Sony to kill off Xperia X and X Compact phones

Sony’s “Premium Standard” line is getting the axe as the Japanese tech company wants to shift its focus to its flagship and mid-range line. Those part of the Premium Standard segment are said to be affordable devices with almost flagship specs. The two devices classified here are the Xperia X and X Compact models. Sony made the announcement at its 2017 Investor Day saying they want to switch the focus to the likes of the Xperia XZ Premium and XZs in the flagship segment and the Xperia XA1 and XA1 Ultra in the mid-range market. Sony is reportedly doing this to help recover market share this year and offer products “with technologies that only Sony can deliver.”

Sony also wants to focus on markets where it can use its strengths to its advantage. These include Japan, East Asia, Middle East, APAC, and Europe. And while they do want to do well in North America, Sony knows they need to make huge investments (particularly in marketing) to get recognized here.

Sony reportedly plans to retire its Xperia C, M, and E brands for Xperia X

Sony has been in the process of rebranding its smartphone efforts; thus, the release of the Xperia X line during MWC 2016. With the new line out, it was seen as the end of the Xperia Z line. However, it looks like that isn’t the only line of products getting cut by Sony. According to reports from Chinese media, even the Xperia C, M, and E brands will be getting cut, while the Xperia X will be developed all the way up to 2018.

The Xperia Z brand was considered the line of premium devices from the Japanese brand, while the C, M, and E brands were more budget-friendly and highlighted specific features like waterproof ratings or battery life. The Xperia X line is seen to expand beyond just smartphones and incorporate all the different consumer electronics Sony develops. Not only is this seen as a way to consolidate its efforts but to also give them room to diversify outside of smartphones and into the growing Internet of Things market as well. Speculation about upcoming Xperia C, M, and E devices will be that they’ll be renamed to fit into the Xperia X brand.

Brazilian artist puts the Sony Xperia X’s camera capabilities to the test

Sony has been proudly boasting of the camera capabilities of its new Xperia X series; sporting some of the best specs out in the market with its 23-megapixel Exmor RS sensor with Predictive Hybrid Autofocus. This autofocus system is said to be the fastest out in the market. Sony had Brazilian visual artist Rafael Mantesso put the device to the test with a photo shoot involving some adorable dogs in Barcelona. They had him take shots around Barcelona City using the Sony Xperia X and then adding his signature playful illustrations to them later.

We get to see how he’s properly able to put the different features to the test, especially being able to take clear shots of the hyperactive dogs even as they move around. He was able to produce images like feeding pigeons in the famed Sagrada Familia or dreaming about bones in a tavern. The new Sony Xperia X, Xperia X Performance, and Xperia XA are expected to come out this summer.
