Apple shows off Portrait Mode of the iPhone 7 Plus with two new ads

Apple boasts the iPhone 7 Plus's new Portrait Mode, which lets users focus in on the subject while blurring out the background, in two new short ads. One of them is entitled Soul Mate and plays on the importance of our dog's in our lives (as you can see above) and another shows the image of a child in a creek. This feature mimics the "bokeh" effect you can get from DSLR cameras. It makes use of the 56mm telephoto lens found in the iPhone 7 Plus as well as the image signal processor of the smartphone and machine learning techniques to help distinguish the subject in the foreground and those in the background. A depth map of the image from the two cameras is used to help keep the subjects in the photo in focus while blurring out the background. It's not a feature most smartphones can do.

New Apple TV ad tugs at heartstrings to promote new iOS messaging features

Apple has long since mastered the art of creating an emotionally powerful ad. Its latest ad isn’t an exception. Promoting the new messaging features in iOS 10, the new video shows a solitary bright red balloon flying from a farmhouse window, over mountains and seas, to fly into the window in the city (where it’s already joined by many balloons) to a girl celebrating her birthday.

What Apple is trying to convey with the ad is there are a lot of new ways to send messages that carry more emotions in them. These include being able to change sizes of the text and make them animated, have color backgrounds, and even swap in emojis for words.

Apple unveils new holiday ad

Following last year’s “Misunderstood” ad, Apple has just released on its site its new holiday ad. Entitled “The Song,” the concept behind it involves a girl who discovers a gift from her grandmother to her grandfather from 1952. It was an old record that has a message talking about how they couldn’t be together for the holidays as well as a rendition of “Love is Here to Stay” by her grandmother. The young girl learned the tunes and vocals of the song and recorded her portions and put it alongside her grandmother’s. She then leaves an iPad mini with a note that says, “A Duet, Press Play” for her grandmother to find.
