iPhone involved in San Bernardino shooting offers no new leads

The iPhone 5c involved in a highly-publicized legal battle between FBI and Apple doesn’t seem to have produced any evidence of substance or any leads, making it seem like a rather anti-climactic ending for this particular issue. FBI and Apple were up against each other for months as the Bureau was pressuring Apple to break its security measures for an iPhone said to have been used during the San Bernardino attack by Syed Farook. The case was called off in the last minute when the FBI got a third-party method to break into the device. Unfortunately, reports suggest that they haven’t been able to recover any useful information from the device. Anonymous law enforcement officials cited by CNN said there weren’t any unknown contacts or message data seen on the phone.

However, CNN emphasized that the phone was at least useful for confirming that the attackers didn’t get outside help, especially during the immediate aftermath of the attack that the FBI is trying to fill in. There is also data on the phone not obtained from previous iCloud backups but it doesn’t seem to bring about new leads into the case.

New iPhones spike online buy and sell activity

With the upcoming release of the Apple iPhone 5s and 5c, a lot of Canadians are getting ready to make the switch.

On Kijiji, a local classifieds ad site, there are now over 29,000 iPhone ads, with more than 9,000 of those for the iPhone 5. There has been over a 36 percent increase in search traffic related to the iPhones with a Canada-wide daily search that has increased up to 32,633. The provinces with the largest search increase since the announcement of the new iPhones include Atlantic Canada at 127 percent, Quebec at 60 percent, and Ontario at 37 percent. Also, average daily mobile phone ad postings across the country have increased by 17 percent since the announcement making it up to 6,856 searches.

Review: Apple iPhone 5c

Text and photos by Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

The iPhone 5c is basically a redesign of the highly successful iPhone 5 with colourful new plastic enclosures. While “beautifully, unapologetically plastic,” the iPhone 5c feels far sturdier and more robust than plastic smartphones in the market today. Hit jump for my impressions and full review of the iPhone 5c.

Apple introduces colourful, budget-friendly iPhone 5c

Apple adds a splash of colour to the iPhone family with the cheaper iPhone 5c. The iPhone 5c is powered by Apple’s A6 chip and runs on iOS 7. It features a 4-inch Retina display, 8-megapixel iSight camera, as well as a new FaceTime HD camera. It also comes with 13 LTE wireless bands, which they said is “more LTE bands than any other smartphone in the world.” Available in five different shades (blue, green, pink, yellow, and white), the iPhone 5c’s shell has been made with a single, hard-coated polycarbonate body and steel reinforced frame. It will land on our shores on September 20 and its current suggested retail price for the US is at $99 for the 16GB model and $199 for the 32GB model.

Apple introduced six silicone cases alongside the iPhone 5c for more customizability. It comes in blue, green, pink, yellow, black, and white for US$29 and will be available on Apple’s Online Store, retail stores, and selected Apple authorized resellers.
