Google kicks off Pixel 6a pre-orders in Canada

Source: Google

If you're waiting to get your hands on the more budget-friendly Pixel 6a, Google has finally opened pre-orders for the device. It costs $599 in Canada and comes in Sage, Chalk, and Charcoal. You can pre-order through Google's site and get a free pair of Pixel Buds A-Series with your order.

The Google Pixel 6a packs in the same Tensor chip powering the Pixel 6. It's similar to how the iPhone SE borrows some specs from the more expensive options. It sports a similar two-tone colour with a distinctive camera bar as the Pixel 6. It has a 6.1-inch OLED 1080p display locked at 60Hz, and an older Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protects the screen. It has an in-screen fingerprint reader but doesn't get wireless charging.

Google launches more budget-friendly Pixel 6A

Google introduced another piece of hardware during its I/O developer conference: a new mid-range device. The Pixel 6A runs on Google's Tensor chip powering the Pixel 6 Pro, making it the first mid-range device from the company that isn't running on a Qualcomm processor. It is also powered by 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a slightly smaller 4,400mAh battery (the Pixel 5A had a 4,680mAh battery). It has a 6.1-inch OLED 1080p display with a 60Hz refresh rate, a 12-megapixel main paired with a 12-megapixel ultra-wide, and an 8-megapixel selfie camera.

Google Pixel 6a rumoured to run on a Tensor chip

We've already seen rumours about the Google Pixel 6a's design, but now we're learning more about the device. A new report from 9to5Google talks about its processor and the cameras the rumoured smartphone will get. Unsurprisingly, it will reportedly run on Google's new Tensor GS101 processor. It makes sense, given that Google has been hyping up its new processor. They would want to use it on more devices.

As for its cameras, the website's APK Insight team did a teardown of the Google Camera app and found that the Pixel 6a (codenamed Bluejay) will get the 12.2-megapixel Sony IMX363 sensor that's been used in past Google phones from the Pixel 3 to the 5a. But it will supposedly get the Pixel 6's 12-megapixel IMX386 sensor, which will most likely serve as the ultra-wide camera on the Pixel 6a. It will also reportedly get the Pixel 6's 8-megapixel IMX355 sensor for the front-facing camera.

Pixel 6a leak suggests the headphone jack is going away

Google Pixel 6 might only be a few weeks old, but the rumours on its more budget-friendly counterpart have begun pouring in. Well-known tipster OnLeaks and 91Mobiles have shared Pixel 6a renders that give the mid-range phone a look similar to the more premium Pixel 6. It gets the phone's signature camera bar, centred hole-punch selfie camera, and an in-screen fingerprint sensor. Unlike other "a" models, though, there are rumours that the Pixel 6a will get rid of its headphone jack.

Specs-wise, not much is known yet. But that's understandable given that the "a" series phone is usually released later in the year. The Pixel 6a is rumoured to get a 6.2-inch OLED screen with dual cameras. But it isn't known if Google will develop a lower-cost Tensor chip or use a third-party processor for this handset.
