‘Luke Cage’ is the latest Netflix-Marvel TV show to get the boot

NetflixJust days after Iron Fist gets axed and four months after the show aired its second season, Luke Cage will not be getting a third season. Netflix and Marvel Television released a joint statement saying, “Unfortunately, ‘Marvel’s Luke Cage’ will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.” According to Variety, talks for season three had taken place but Netflix “ultimately decided” it wasn’t going to be feasible.

This seems to be Netflix’s way of cutting ties with Marvel as its parent company Disney prepares to launch its own streaming services. Disney has previously announced it was going to let its licensing deals with Marvel expire before it moved its content to its own service. That move though wouldn’t have affected the Marvel TV shows as these were produced by Disney for Netflix. Now, how this will affect the remaining Marvel shows on Netflix is something we’ll probably see unfold in the coming months.

Netflix hasn’t confirmed ‘Luke Cage’ Season 3 yet

While rumour has it that the writers of Luke Cage are already working on the third season of the show, Netflix hasn’t confirmed its return yet. Cindy Holland, Netflix’s vice president of original content, said during the Television Critics Association press tour that they “haven’t made any firm decisions yet.” If it does push through, Luke Cage will be the third Marvel and Netflix co-produced show to get a third season (after Daredevil and Jessica Jones). The show has been generally well-received. On review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, its first season earned 94 percent, while its recently-released second season got 84 percent. We wouldn’t be surprised if Netflix decides to give it one more go.

We might not see Rosario Dawson in Marvel TV universe soon

For followers of the MCU x Netflix Marvel shows, you know how instrumental Rosario Dawson’s character Claire Temple has been for this universe. She has been described as the glue that’s kept the different vigilantes turned superheroes in the Marvel TV universe. We get to see her again with Luke Cage premieres next month (on June 22, to be exact) but it looks like Dawson is ready to call it quits. She told Screen Geek, “Yeah, its [sic] pretty wild actually. I don’t know if I’ll be back after this, to be honest, but it’s been an amazing few years. I’ve been on a lot of different shows. I mean, I don’t know if maybe they do a third season of Luke Cage potentially, or maybe if they figure out some kind of way for me to be on The Punisher—just so I can feel like I’ve done every show. But it’s been like, my daughter is high school, so I kinda wanna’ not be 3000 miles away for work.”

We won’t fault her for wanting to take a break, especially after appearing on most of the Netflix Marvel shows. And perhaps with The Defenders finally in contact with each other, there would be less need for Claire to be around. It’ll give the actress time for her family. Let’s just hope Marvel doesn’t pull an Infinity War on us and do anything too drastic.

How non-comic book fans find their way to Netflix’s Marvel shows

With The Defenders fresh out of Netflix’s and Marvel’s oven, the streaming service is giving us a bit of an insight on how even non-comic book fans are getting hooked into the Marvel shows. Their biggest aide? Netflix’s algorithm. According to Netflix, 80 percent of show discovery on the service is through Netflix recommendations. But how does one go from say Master of None to Jessica Jones? Netflix explains and we’ll let them do the talking (or writing) below:
