PayPal will charge inactive accounts in Canada a $20 annual fee

Photo by Brett Jordan from PexelsIf you have a PayPal account, make sure to use it sometimes. The payment platform quietly added a $20 account inactivity fee in the country. The change was spotted in PayPal's Canadian User Agreement, which was updated on August 11. The note simply stated, "We are introducing an annual account inactivity of $20 CAD," effective November 20, 2021. Beyond this update, PayPal hasn't mentioned this upcoming change elsewhere. It hasn't said what it considers an inactive account, either.

If it follows the policy it implemented on UK accounts back in December, the criteria is you need to use your PayPal at least once within 12 months to avoid the charge. You can also take out any PayPal wallet balances you have because the payment platform won't charge credit or debit cards linked to your account. In the UK, the accounts approaching the one-year inactivity mark are warned via email. It isn't known if that will be the case for Canadian account holders, too.

You can now use PayPal with Apple services

PayPal just announced that its payment service is now coming to Apple’s major services. You can now use it for the App Store, Apple Music, iTunes, and iBooks on both iOS and Mac devices. It’s available in Canada, the US, the UK, Mexico, Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain. Setting it up is similar to how you would a credit card. PayPal now shows up as a payment option. So when you select that, any purchases you made on that Apple ID will be charged to your PayPal account.

New PayPal.me personal link helps people get paid back

PayPal launched the new PayPal.Me: your personal link to getting paid back. PayPal.Me removes the stress behind IOUs and makes collecting money from your friend, coworker or a group of people hassle-free. It is the future of collecting money for your kid’s soccer team or getting paid back for dinner with your friends.
A recent Money Habits Study reveals that nearly one in three Canadians have lost a friend or relationship over unpaid IOUs. On an average, Canadians are owed $462 (CAD), and globally people are owed over $51 billion (US) in unpaid small debts noted the study.

PayPal me simplifies the payment process by giving the payer an image link and they can enter the amount they want to pay in a small box. This is an easier way to request payment because small debts do add up.

Video: How PayPal is enabling mobile payments in Toronto

By Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

Earlier today, I went on a tour in dowtown Toronto with Alexander Peh, PayPal Canada’s head of mobile, to preview mobile apps that make everyday life easier. PayPal has been in the online and micro-payments business for many years now and they've adopted the latest technologies. Their mobile solution, which works on iPhones, Android devices, Windows Phone and BlackBerry phones, is compatible with over 100 businesses in Toronto which can enable secure payments.

Alexander Peh explained how  mobile apps and online food delivery services make use of PayPal payments these  include parking app HonkMobile, ride sharing app Blancride, Beck Taxi, food ordering service Grabb, Kupfert & Kim and grocery and booze delivery service Urbery. PayPal earns a commission on each transaction made with these retailers and service providers.
