SourceCode: CTV delivers an Olympic viewing experience for web and mobile

By Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

I've been really impressed by how CTV has managed to optimize and deliver the 2012 London Olympics in various formats. The live feeds and recaps are a given on their various TV and cable channels but there is a wealth of content to be found online through the CTV website  or RDS in French, as well as their iOS and Android apps which give viewers in Canada unprecedented access to the games.

Google introduces handwritten search on tablets and smartphones

Sometimes tablet and smartphone keyboards aren't ideal for quick search so Google has enabled a beta feature called Handwrite. Users can use their fingers to write search terms. A simple and smart idea actually rests on a a numner of technologies like handwriting recognition and search logic. Still in beta (your mileage may vary), it's only a matter of time before Google makes this a standard on compatible devices.

It's available on Google.com from your smartphone or tablet, and is activated in your mobile search settings. It's not always easy to use the keyboard on your phone or tablet, especially when you're on the go. Instead, try Handwrite (beta) on Google.com to write your search terms with your finger rather than typing the words on the keyboard. As you write, your handwritten text converts into words in the search box.

NPD: Tablets expected to surpass notebooks by 2016

Research firm NDP DisplaySearch foresees tablets surpassing notebooks in terms of sales and popularity by 2016. The report states, "Tablet PCs, such as Apple’s iPad, are expected to be the growth driver for the mobile PC market over the next few years. Tablet shipments will surpass notebook shipments in 2016, according to the latest NPD DisplaySearch Quarterly Mobile PC Shipment and Forecast Report. Overall mobile PC shipments will grow from 347M units in 2012 to over 809M units by 2017.

The report adds that , "while notebook PC shipments are expected to increase from 208M units in 2012 to 393M units by 2017, tablet PC shipments are expected to grow from 121M units to 416M units in this period, for a compound annual growth rate of 28%."

We are really nearing the post-PC era where notebooks are becoming less necessary because many of their features and functions will be available on tablets. It is no wonder that the leading technology companies all have a stakein the tablet market and that Microsoft and Google have even gone as far as making their own tablet devices to cover segments where Apple's iPad isn't openly competing.
