LG to unveil new version of webOS smart TV platform at CES 2016

webOS has taken quite a journey. Originally the mobile operating system of the Palm Pre family of devices (as well as the ill-received HP TouchPad), webOS was licensed to LG who made it the cornerstone of their unique and animated smart TV platform a few years ago.  While Smart TV is no longer a catchphrase many get excited about, LG hopes to shake things up at CES when it reveals the all new and improved webOS TV platform.

LG webOS 3.0 was designed to provide an exceptional user experience to allow for more intuitive navigation of the TV's features. Since its introduction in 2014, LG webOS has been praised as one of the most versatile smart TV platforms by most major industry experts and publications.

webOS returns to mobile as a smart watch OS

LG has had the good sense to make good use of webOS as a Smart Watch operating system. The once pioneering Palm mobile OS was recently used in LG's Smart TVs and now it seems there's an earnest move to create webOS SmartWatch for developers.

One one hand, it's great to see webOS back in some form but on the other hand, manufacturers spinning off their non Android Wear wearable operating systems (Samsung's got Tizen), means fragmentation in the still-emerging wearable market. This could pose some issues for users and also for developers choosing alliances. This also tells us that manufacturers aren't keen in having Google control the whole ecosystem.

Video: First look at LG's webOS powered SmartTV

Here's a video showing what webOS can do as a SmartTV interface. webOS was Palm's mobile operating system that ran its Pre handsets and after HP purchased and eventually shelved Palm and webOS, the remnants got sold to LG. With less than a year in development, webOS on LG's SmartTV looks and feels like a responsive and very user-focused interface. It is so much better than some of the kludgy, cluttered and hard to navigate and control SmartTV implementations we've seen in past years. This video demo, taken today in LG's headquarters in Toronto, shows the future of webOS and I have to say I'm pretty impressed at what it can do.
