Windows 8 Release Preview now available

On it's Windows 8 blog today Microsoft announced the availability of the Windows 8 Release Preview in 14 languages. Windows 8 is entering the final stages of development and is on the road to general availability.

Windows 8 is the next major version of Microsoft's desktop operating system which will receive a dramatic user interface overhaul as it adopts the Metro UI used in Windows Phone OS.

Windows 8 tablets start going on sale...on eBay

Microsoft gave 5,000 developer/attendees to last week's BUILD Conference some Windows 8 Tablets which were to serve as developer machines for the upcoming tile-based OS. Well some of these Windows 8 tablets are appearing on eBay and Craigslist and for an exorbitant amount of money. One guy got his device up for 1,900 Euros ( equivalent to CAD $2,577). That's a lot of money for something that is still in very early stages of development, but we won't judge.

Breaking News: Windows 8 preview on video, shows tile-driven interface

Feast your eyes on the first look at Windows 8. The walkthrough shows the most striking revision to Microsoft's 25-year-old operating system and takes a lot of touch-controlled elements from Windows Phone. Visually, it's high-style and flashy but at least its original and different. What is interesting is we're seeing elements of mobile operating systems making it to the desktop. It's happening with iOS and OS X Lion and apparently Windows 8 is getting its fair share of the Mango treatment.

WIndows 8 to feature built-in app store?

The unconfirmed screenshot above from Winrumors reveals a possibly interesting development for Windows 8. A Windows App Store. Looks like there will be an Apps section as well as a Store section where downloaded apps are collected. The mock up shows Office 2010 as one of the downloadable applications. The best thing about built-in App Stores is automatic app updates which will make everyone's life easier.
