Review: TomTom Go 500 GPS

By Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

Because I use my smartphone's various navigation features, my standalone GPS device has sat unused in my glove compartment for the past few years. The smartphone's constant data connection plus the variety of mapping apps and turn-by-turn direction options seemed good enough for me. But after I tried TomTom Go 500 GPS, I seriously reconsidered this approach.

A standalone GPS unit frees your smartphone from navigation duties and makes it possible to use the smartphone for fun stuff like playing back music, podcasts and most importantly, for making calls or taking messages (provided you're not driving, of course).

Enjoy glasses-free 3D on your mobile devices with EyeFly3D

If you want to watch 3D videos on your Apple iPhone or iPad or on your Google Nexus 7, EyeFly3D offers screen protectors that can let you watch 3D movies on those devices without the use of glasses. The protector for the iPhone costs US$26.95 and the iPad Air protector costs $59.95. There will also be protectors for iPad mini and Nexus 7 but there are no details on pricing or availability.

The product incorporates 500,000 nano-lenses onto the screen protector to help create that stereoscopic effect. EyeFly has provided Vid and Img apps to view 3D content or load 3D videos from the File Sharing feature on iTunes. The company claims it will not affect 2D use of your device.

YouTube arrives on Nintendo 3DS, does not support 3D clips

If you’ve been lamenting the lack of YouTube on your Nintendo 3DS device, the wait is over as the YouTube app is finally available on the 3DS eShop. Ironically though, the video streaming app on the 3DS does not support 3D YouTube clips. The videos are streamed on the top screen and the bottom screen serves as a touchscreen control hub. You can also use the shoulder buttons to navigate, the directional pad to scroll, or the stylus to control everything.

HP’s 2311gt 3D monitor delivers home 3D

HP announced its 2311gt3D Monitor and HP Wireless TV Connect 2.0 for consumers to experience, create and share 3D content. HP’s 2311gt 3D monitor delivers the ultimate 3D experience in an ultra slim 23-inch LED backlit display and features Film Patterned Retarder technology which offers a brighter display, clearer images and a flicker-free 3D picture.

Bundled with two pairs of passive 3D glasses, users will also enjoy software from Cyberlink and TriDef as well as a 3D movie trailer for the upcoming animated film “Puss in Boots” from DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. With Cyberlink’s PowerDVD, users can convert their existing 2D content such as photos and videos into 3D content while the TriDef Ignition Game Player displays 2D games in 3D. HP Wireless TV Connect 2.0 allows users to stream 3D content from a PC directly to a television. It features a smaller, updated design that is now completely wire-free.
