Pinterest can now help you search for images by skin tone

A new feature Pinterest is rolling out in beta will make it easier for you to search for looks you want to achieve. When you filter hair and beauty searches, it can be refined further by skin tone ranges. This new feature comes after the social media platform found that 70 percent of the people who answered its survey used Pinterest to look for everyday looks and styles. It took a bit of work to get this feature right as lighting, shadows, and other factors were needed to be considered when programming its search filters to identify skin tones. Pinterest tapped third-party beauty app ModiFace and its facial data library to train its algorithms to properly identify skin tones in different lighting conditions. The social media platform promises that when users search for skin tones that information will not be stored or be used for advertising purposes. And Pinterest promises to continue developing this feature as well as other more inclusive search options for its users in order for them to get more personalized results.

Pinterest localizes search for international users

Pinterest is hoping to get more non-English speaking users to use its site more. That’s why the company implemented increased localized search results as well as international autocomplete and spellcheck. It seems to have a positive effect though as more pinners in countries like Brazil, France, Germany, and Japan have discovered and saved twice the amount of localized pins using search.

The site also has a new language detection model and algorithm to show relevant and similar pins that also match localized descriptions and links without duplicating what’s in their users’ feed.

Pinterest looking to diversify its workforce

Pinterest has plans to bring in more women and minorities into its staff, according to Evan Sharp, the company’s co-founder and CEO. Sharp detailed in a blog post how they plan to change its full-time engineering sector to have 30 percent female and eight percent minorities. They also intend to put to practice the “Rooney-rule” where they are required to interview at least one person from an underrepresented background and one female candidate for every available leadership role. By making their plans public, Pinterest hopes other companies will follow suit.
