Google planning to fix Nexus 5 camera with an OTA Android 4.4.1 update

By Corey Herscu

And boom goes the dynamite.

When Google launched the Nexus 5 just over a month ago, there were two key love/hate features: Android 4.4 KitKat was loved, the poor camera functionality was not. From my usage of the device, as much as I adored the new features that came with KitKat, I couldn't get over how unusable the camera was (this isn't to say hacks aren't available to fix the issue. I am talking about out of box experience), that's why I swapped out to a different device for an improved cameraphone experience.

Well, friends, the gaping camera issue has finally been acknowledged. According to Dave Burke, Director of Engineering at Google, the issue came down to "tweaking how long the shutter stayed open in different lighting scenarios. The team initially thought the optical image stabilization, which is built into the Nexus 5′s hardware, would prevent blurriness, but it didn’t compensate enough for the software’s tendency to force the shutter to overstay its welcome."

According to The Verge, Google plans a 4.4.1 rollout to address these concerns with an almost exclusive focus improving the overall camera performance.

CIBC rolls out "mobile cheque deposit" update for iOS and Android

As big and proud a nation that we are, when it comes to adopting new technologies, Canada has always been a bit delayed to the game. ING first adopted this feature not too long ago, so today's announcement from CIBC is a big, positive step in the right direction; hopefully the rest of the Canadian banks follow suit. Basically, what this app update does is grants users' the ability to deposit cheques (personal or business) into their account using the camera on their iPhone, iPad, or Android smartphone or tablet.

Of course, this convenience does not run users' any additional bank fees.

Canadian Reviewer was on the floor at the first annual Gentleman's Expo!

Text and photos by Corey Herscu

Being November, commonly known to guys as prostate cancer awareness month or "Movember", it was timely to attend the first annual Gentleman’s Expo over at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in downtown Toronto. The show was, as you can guess, about all things manly and gentleman-like with activities such as: scotch tasting, charity poker (with proceeds going to Movember), hair cuts, straight razor shaves, shoe shines and a lot more. Hit jump for details on the event.

Google begins Android 4.4 OTA rollout for Nexus 4 devices

After a buggy and botched initial launch, Google has finally flipped the switch on an official OTA rollout of Android 4.4 KitKat for Nexus 4 device owners.

Word online is that Google is keeping the GE launcher, complete with right-swipe Google Now access, exclusively to the Nexus 5 for now, it’s possible to make it happen. On a more positive note, with the update you’ll receive transparent status bars, Immersive Mode support, a new dialler, an improved file picker and, of course, the little improvements that make Android as joyful as it is.

Go on and press update (over WiFi of course) if you haven't already been notified. Otherwise, be patient, it'll come. Nexus 7 owners? We feel your pain, Google's decided to take their time with a staggered rollout for that device for no good reason.
