Google updates Family Link parental controls

Image: Google

Google announced updates to its Family Link parental control service, giving parents more oversight over their children's Android device usage. The most notable change is the replacement of the Highlights tab with a Screen Time tab for quicker access to time management features. Meanwhile, a new School Time option allows parents to restrict app usage during school hours, expanding a feature previously available on some smartwatches.

Family Link also now allows parents to manage their child's contact list, approving or denying new entries. While the service offers content filtering and time limits, it does not allow parents to view emails, messages, or web activity. Children can opt out of Family Link once they turn 13.

Zuckerberg argues that complex moderation systems often lead to unintended censorship, impacting millions of users. By empowering the community to assess and provide context for potentially misleading information through Community Notes, Meta aims to improve accuracy and reduce reliance on internal fact-checkers. While Community Notes have shown promise on other platforms, concerns remain about their effectiveness in preventing misinformation spread.

Gurman wrote in his Power On newsletter that the feature is expected to be exclusive to the high-end Ultra model as part of a strategy to differentiate its premium devices.
