BB10 OS not coming to BlackBerry PlayBook

Despite earlier reports that the BlackBerry 10 OS, now running on the Z10 and Q10 smrtphones, would breathe new life into the PlayBook tablet, BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins has confirmed that the company will not pursue porting BB10 for the PlayBook. 

This is bad news for users of the 7-inch tablet who have been holding out for a feature refresh as well as a more unified experience across BlackBerry devices. The writing has been on the wall for the PlayBook after Heins said there was no future in tablets. The PlayBook was also a remant of RIM's 'old regime', brought to market in the dark days before Heins took over the reins of the troubled company.

Reuters: Apple iPad mini coming on October 23rd

After months of rumours and speculation peppered by part leaks, 3D renderings and dummy devices, it looks like Apple is readying to unveil the much awaited iPad mini.  A report from Reuters  states that Apple will release a smaller and less costly iPad mini with a 7.85-inch screen. the device is expected to compete against popular tablets like Amazon's Kindle Fire, RIM's PlayBook and Google's Nexus 7.

BlackBerry Video Store now available for PlayBooks

BlackBerry PlayBook users can now download the BlackBerry Video Store on the App World. The BlackBerry Video Store offers a catalog of thousands of movies and TV shows with new releases available for purchase or rent. With the Video Store, customers have the option of streaming a trailer before making a purchase decision, and can also begin watching media as soon as they start to download a file. They won’t have to wait for the entire file to transfer before they can begin enjoying great entertainment on the tablet’s high resolution display or on an HDTV using the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet’s HDMI output. Older titles will cost around $9.95,  new ones are $19.95 to purchase. 

Canadians can download the Video Store app on BlackBerry App World starting today.
